INDIAN WELLS, Calif -- Top seed Serena Williams has pulled out of BNP Paribas with a left knee injury. This would have been Williams's first tournament since winning her 23rd Grand Slam in Australia this year.
"Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can."
The tournament shared the news on social media:
Since Williams won't be able to defend her finalist points she gained last year, second seed Angelique Kerber will take over the No. 1 ranking when the tournament concludes.
