INDIAN WELLS, Calif -- Karolina Pliskova and Svetlana Kuznetsova are set to battle for the spot in the final of the BNP Paribas Open today. Both players will aim to win their first titles here at Indian Wells. Here is a preview of the match:
3rd seed Karolina Pliskova v 8th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova
After making the final of the U.S.Open last year, Pliskova finished the year strong and has been playing great tennis this season, winning Brisbane and Doha titles. Her road to the semifinals in Indian Wells includes coming from a set down to win over 2016 Olympic Gold medalist Monica Puig in the second set, a straight-sets third round win over Irina-Camelia Begu, a fourth round win over Timea Bacsinszky when she retired in the first set with a left wrist injury, and a tough win over French Open defending champion Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals.
Kuznetsova is a two-time finalist here in the California desert, which means she's comfortable with the conditions. Her road to the semifinals includes a second-round win over Johanna Larsson, defeating 2015 U.S. Open finalist Roberta Vinci in the third round, coming from a set down to take the fourth round match over Caroline Garcia, and triumphing over compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals.
Both Pliskova and Kuznetsova have had to dig deep to find a way to win some tough matches during this tournament, but it will be difficult for Kuznetsova to beat red-hot Pliskova. Winner: Pliskova in three set.
