INDIAN WELLS, Calif -- Svetlana Kuznetsova stunned No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Friday night.
The Russian came out firing on all cylinders, overwhelming the Czech, breaking twice to go up 3-0. Pliskova got one break back and consolidated it, bringing the score to 2-3.
Kuznetsova served for the first set at 5-4 but Pliskova broke, leveling the score at 5-5. They both held, taking the set to a tiebreak. Kutzenova jumped to an early lead in the tiebreak, taking the set 7-6(5).
In the second set tiebreak, the 31-year-old Russian led the way, wrapping up the match 7-6(5), 7-6(2).
The No. 8 seed plays compatriot Elena Vesnina in the final. Vesnina defeated Kristina Mladenovic in the other semifinal. The Russians have faced each other twice, splitting the matches.
"I really trust my coach, so I will ask him about it," said Kuznetsova about the matchup . "But she plays pretty flat, aggressive tennis. That's it. I play more defense, but my spin is my key, probably."
