INDIAN WELLS, Calif -- Top seed Angelique Kerber and Dominic Thiem advanced to the third round at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. Kerber defeated compatriot Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-1 while Thiem beat Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-4.
Like a lot of players, Kerber did not find it easy playing against fellow German.
"I mean, of course it was not easy to play against her, and we know each other very long," said the top seed. "We are both up-and-downs in our careers.
"I was trying today just focusing more on my side of the tennis court. Just being focused on my game, because I think the last three years I [lost] here in the first round, so that was also something in my mind that I would like to change this year and just go through it."
Kerber next faces Pauline Parmentier, who defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3.
Thiem will meet the winner of Mischa" Zverev and Joao Sousa.
