INDIAN WELLS, Calif -- Top seed Angelique had to dig deep as she found herself down a break in the third set against Pauline Parmentier at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday afternoon.
The German took the first set but Parmentier came back strong in the second set as she overwhelmed Kerber to take the set 6-3. The Frenchwoman continued playing aggressive tennis, securing an early break in the third. Refusing to be sent home today, Kerber found a way to break back later in the set and was able to close out the set 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
The players had to deal with the desert weather, which reached the 90's in the early part of the day.
"It's really hot here." said Kerber after her match "At the end, it was a tough match and a high-level match from both of us. Pauline played unbelievably from the first ball, and we both battled until the end.
"I'm just happy to win because it was really close, and really up and down. I'm just happy to be in the next round!"
Lauren Davis continued playing good tennis with a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 win over Julia Goerges.
