Zhang Shuai Upsets Roland Garros Champ Muguruza

DOHA, Qatar -- 31st-ranked Zhang Shuai is through to the quarterfinals after a three-set win over reigning Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza. Shuai won the match 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

With most of yesterday's first round matches suspended due to rain, Muguruza had to play both her first and second round matches today. She defeated Cagla Buyukakcay 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

"I woke up thinking that I was going to have a very tough day," Muguruza said after. "This morning I warm up at 9:00 in the morning. I played pretty good the first match. The second one, Zhang played very well. The conditions were difficult. There was a lot of wind. She was finding her shots. At the end I think was two points difference and they went to her."

In other matches, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig secured a quarterfinal spot after Yulia Putintseva retired from their second round match. Puig was leading 6-2, 4-6, 2-1 before Putintseva retired with injury.
