Every summer, a flock of accomplished juniors make their way into big time events. On the women’s side, one of America hopefuls this year was a 5’ 10” lefthander from Newport Beach, California. Her name: Ashley Kratzer. In August, Kratzer won the USTA Girls 18s National Hardcourt. Kratzer said she was surprised by the result, admitting she’d expected to only reach the semis.
The victory gave Kratzer a wild card into the main draw of the US Open women’s tournament. Though she lost in the first round to Tatjana Maria, Kratzer no doubt came with valuable experience.
Just prior to the tournament, James Blake spoke with this promising young American.
