We’re going to briefly avoid telling you this American tennis player’s name because it too quickly lends itself to all sorts of obvious puns.
So instead, let’s tell you that he was an excellent college player. Back in 2010, as a freshman, he helped the University of Tennessee reach the NCAA final. But he didn’t exactly rocket up the ranks. Just over a year ago, he wasn’t even in the top 300 in the world.
But now, this 26-year-old American has worked extremely hard and this year made his way into the main draw of the US Open for the first time. Yesterday he fought hard, losing a highly competitive four-setter to 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic. But rest assured, he’ll be back in the thick of many more events.
His name is Tennys Sandgren. Go ahead, have fun with the name. But also, take a moment to listen to him tell his story. Tennys, anyone?
