Tennis and the Arts Collide in Experimental Opera

The Industry, an experimental L.A. opera, debuts "Balls," a progressive piece about the "Battle of the Sexes" match played between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973. With King emerging the victor, the iconic match made a statement about the equal treatment of women in sports, and elevated the women's rights movement to the national spotlight.

"Balls," exploits the political, comedic, and climactic elements of the "Battle of the Sexes" match. Composer Laura Karpman took inspiration to write this piece from her own experiences of sexism in her industry.

"Balls" will debut Friday night in The Industry's "First Take," a workshop that allows composers to perform their piece for an audience at the innovative opera and test experimental concepts that are shaping the future of American opera.

See "Balls" 7 p.m. Friday, February 24 at the Aratani Theater (244 S. San Pedro St., L.A). Tickets are free on a first-come, first-served basis, or you can reserve your seat for $10 online. For more information visit
